Gamecocks Earn No. 3 National Seed for 2017 FCS Playoffs

the No. 3 National Seed in the NCAA Division I Football Playoffs and will host either Samford or Kennesaw State on Dec. 2 at 1 p.m.

Fresh off a 36-6 win over Tennessee State that sealed the Gamecocks’ fourth-straight outright Ohio Valley Conference Championship, the team and its fans gathered in JSU Stadium to learn their playoff fate on Sunday morning’s NCAA FCS Selection Show.

JSU earned a bye in the 24-team field for the fifth-straight year and the No. 3 National Seed. Samford will travel to Kennesaw State on Nov. 25, with the winner visiting Jacksonville for the second-round matchup.

The Gamecocks (10-1, 8-0 OVC) became just the fourth team to win four-straight OVC titles and the first since since Eastern Kentucky won four from 1981-84 and became the first to go four-straight seasons with perfect conference records in OVC play. Their 32nd consecutive conference win on Thursday extended the longest active conference winning streak in Division I and teh second-longest in FCS history.

As long as the Gamecocks advance, the No. 3 seed guarantees JSU will be in the friendly confines of Burgess-Snow Field for at least the second round and the quarterfinals. The only scenario that would have JSU leave home before the National Championship Game would be if No. 2 North Dakota State is still alive in the field during the semifinal round. The FCS Title will be decided in Frisco, Texas, on Jan. 6 at 11 a.m. CT.

Defending champion James Madison earned the No. 1 overall seed, while Central Arkansas is fourth. The No. 5 seed is South Dakota State, Sam Houston State is No. 6 and Wofford is No. 7. Southern Utah rounds out the eight national seeds at No. 8.
